Top Player & Team Storylines for the 2024 NFL Season (and Fresh Gear)

Among the most intriguing 2024 NFL narratives around players and teams heading into the 2024 NFL season, the epic drama of the Kansas City Chiefs stands out. The pivotal plot of the saga is, of course, this year’s version of the unfolding career history of Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs—and their three-peat quest remain the most compelling 2024 NFL storyline—but there are certainly other contenders.

Can the Kansas City Chiefs Make Super Bowl History, Again?

Of all the NFL teams to watch in 2024, keep a laser focus on the seemingly invincible Kansas City Chiefs. With the Chief’s record in 3 of the last 4 Super Bowls, the team has proven to be the best performer in the US over recent years. However, in early August, KC incurred the early loss of Marquise Brown due to a shoulder injury during Mahome’s first drive of the preseason game against Jacksonville.

Adding to the potential difficulty of facing the fall season without “Hollywood” Brown, one of the club’s core game-winning squad members, defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs may have to be cut due to extreme personal legal problems.

Further, wide receiver Rashee Rice is at risk of an NFL suspension during the season due to a list of serious charges. So, the Chiefs organization is not without concerns about unforeseen challenges going into the 2024-25 season.

Major Player Trades in 2024

There has been a lot of noise around the Buffalo Bills management’s aggressive rate of budget-reducing cuts among veteran players (each with the team from 5 to 7 years). They include safety Jordan Poyer, cornerback Tre'Davious White, center Mitch Morse, cornerback Siran Neal, and kick return specialist Deonte Harty.

The scale of this reorganization of the starting lineup is certainly noteworthy but there is speculation about how impactful the changes may actually be. Key offsetting factors in the Bills’ rationale for the moves primarily include the readiness of other players under contract who are competent to fill some of the new gaps.

They include wide receiver Khalil Shakir, who ended his second season with the NFL’s highest WR catch ratio (86.7%). Tight end Dalton Kincaid is also on the list of Bills rising stars. He broke the club’s records as a rookie last year and hopes to expand his responsibilities this season. Wide receiver Keon Coleman has also just come on board after a stellar record last year at FSU.

Combine all this fresh talent with the exceptional skills of quarterback Josh Allen and the savvy leadership of Sean McDermott and his new young coaching staff. For perspective, the Bills, from whom KC narrowly escaped in the 2023-24 playoffs, are favored over the Chiefs in the Sportsline Super Bowl picks scenario. So, by any meaningful measure, Buffalo is a team to watch closely this fall.

Who’s Under the Most Pressure to Make a Deep Playoff Run This Year?

There are at least a half-dozen serious contenders, and it’s arguably too early to predict outcomes. But, based on a range of particulars, it’s fair to say a few can be identified as especially promising NFL teams going into the 2024 season. They include the Kansas City Chiefs ostensibly leading the pack. And, the Buffalo Bills, cannot be denied their rightful place on the list, especially based on their history with the Chiefs and current strong lineup.

However, Philadelphia is another team to watch. The Eagles are led by head coach Nick Sirianni, who holds the franchise’s all-time record for the highest percentage of wins. Also note  that the Detroit Lions also have a young lineup and a $50 million budget to build the team. Plus, they very nearly reached the Super Bowl last season.

Finally, don’t count out Green Bay. While the Packers have a roster loaded with returning and fresh talent alike on both sides of the ball, an elite quarterback in Jordan Love, and an innovative head coach in Matt LaFleur. All in all, expect the Packers to not need until the second half of the season to really surge. They should be a dominant force in the NFC from Week 1 onward.
