6 Essential Outdoor Activities to Enjoy Before Fall Ends

As temperatures drop lower and lower, the onset of winter weather feels like a ticking clock.

But before the frigid forecast truly sets in, there are still a few weeks left to make the most out of fall outdoor activities. With limited daylight on the horizon, this is the time to take advantage of all your favorite fall hobbies.

Below, we pulled together a list of our go-to interactive ideas that you can put on your end-of-season bucket list, and a few outfit ideas to match.

1. Go Hiking or Camping

Without a doubt, hiking is one of the best things to do outside in fall. Between captivating foliage, mild weather, and scenic outlooks reaching aesthetic perfection, this is the time to strap on your sturdy sneakers and get going.

If you’re going for a day trip and can’t decide on a trail, figure out which elements you’re hoping to see, how long you plan to hike, and how much of an incline you’re up for. And if you want to get away for the weekend, there are plenty of spots in late fall where you can camp overnight.

Just be sure to check your selected area’s information to confirm if you need a permit or not. If you’re heading to a National Park, like our local favorites Olympic or Mount Rainier, head to the official NPS website for details.

2. Take a Neighborhood Nature Walk

While hiking is a great option for immersing yourself in nature, it’s not the only choice. You can likely experience the benefits of nature steps away from your home, especially if you live in an area packed with local parks and nature trails with local wildlife. For instance, our Seattle hometown features some pretty spectacular sights near the city, like Green Lake Park

And if you want to amp up the exercise intensity, you can grab arm or ankle weights. Since we’re heading into the holiday season, this is also a fantastic time to admire how your neighbors are decorating their porches for each holiday.

3. Conquer an Outdoor Court

Before it's unbearable to move outside, or there’s snow blocking the court, this is the time of year to get in your last outdoor swings for tennis or pickleball. Whether you play in a regular league or have a group you like to play pickup games with, mark a few days down where you play. A great way to do this is by signing up for a local tournament.

Since you’ll be working up a sweat, it’s important to strategically pick your layering choices. Start with a moisture-wicking light layer, like this breathable and lightweight men’s hooded shirt, and top with a supportive outerwear piece you can take off as needed, like this adaptable and stretchy women’s jacket. Whatever keeps up with your every move is worth it!

4. Read Your Favorite Book Outside

Something tough to do with bulky winter gloves? Turning the page on your latest book.

Whether you like to bring a book to your cozy chair on your porch or have a favorite picnic spot in the park, fall is the ideal time to make the most of reading and relaxing outside. To truly soak in these moments, pour a healthy cup of coffee or herbal tea into an insulated mug that you can sip on as you dive into your latest memoir, mystery or romance novel. If you’re in a book club, or want to start one, it might be fun to grab a picnic blanket or a few chairs and host your next fall meeting outside.

While this time will be sweet to soak in, don’t forget reading inside by the fireplace isn’t a bad option either.

5. Build a Backyard Fire Pit

Speaking of fire, as the nightfall air rushes in, this is prime time to make the most out of a fire pit in your backyard. Whether you’re solo, or with family or friends, there are a few things more relaxing than sitting outside a crackling campfire.

This is the time to show off your best roasting skills. Bust out some hot dogs, or melt big marshmallows for gooey s’mores. As the night goes on, bring a thick blanket to keep you warm, or layer with a cozy fleece women’s jacket, or a versatile and comfortable men’s pullover

6. Play Lawn Games at a Local Spot

While we’ve mentioned some high-intensity and relaxing activities throughout this list, sometimes you need something in the middle.

From classic cornhole, bocce, and jenga, it’s common for local breweries, wineries, or farms to have outdoor games available to play. You can also purchase these items for your home if you have access to a lawn or patio. Either way, it’s a fun way to create a little healthy competition when you’re spending time with friends or family.

As long as the weather is great, enjoy the day!
