March Madness is one of the biggest events in NCAA sports, but how did it all start? The first ever NCAA division 1 basketball tournament happened with the Oregon Ducks defeating Ohio State in 1939. With only 8 teams competing in 1939, the tournament eventually expanded to 68 teams in 2011.
Where did the term March Madness come from?
Henry V. Porter, an Illinois high school official, first referred to basketball as March Madness in 1939. The name was picked up by the NCAA in 1982 when a former Chicago sportswriter said it on a CBS broadcast during the tournament. The term has been used for the Division I NCAA basketball tournament ever since.
What is the biggest upset in March Madness history?
If there’s anything about March Madness, it’s that no game can be predicted. All 68 teams come out to play, and whether you are the number 1 seed or in last place, any team can make it to the Final Four.
What is known to be the biggest upset in March Madness history, was when the 16-seed UMBC defeated the 1-seed Virginia Cavaliers by 20 points. This ruined nearly everyone’s brackets for the tournament and will go down in history forever.
What teams are in March Madness this year?
Teams are to be selected on March 12th, better known as Selection Sunday, and the first 4 games will take place on March 14th-15th. The Final Four is scheduled for April 1st, with the NCAA championship game on April 3rd.
