Ask CB: Answering 5 Questions About Sherpa

Meet the soft fabric that’s sweeping the Cutter and Buck nation.

Sherpa is the latest comfortable craze, and we’re tapping into this magic material by infusing it in our product lines. Before we show you a few of our favorite styles, we’re answering some of the most common questions about sherpa below.

Let’s settle the great debate. Which is warmer - sherpa or thermal?

As you choose your winter wardrobe, or pack for a ski trip, it’s important to do your homework on the warmest fabrics on the market. A common pick is thermal, which offers a unique texture that traps in body heat. The only downside is that in order to withstand below freezing temperatures, you’ll need to use this as a layering tool, not the complete solution.

Sherpa on the other hand is known for its heat retention properties, which is why it’s constantly being incorporated in clothes, blankets and mittens.

What is sherpa made from?

Typically, sherpa is made by tightly twisting yarn. This creates a fleece fabric, and it is crimped with a wire brush to create a wool appearance.

Our sherpa fleece is made a bit differently. As part of our Toward Ever Better initiative, we’re always looking for sustainable ways to create our products. If we can use recycled materials at any point of the production process, we do it. Our sherpa pieces are built with up to 31 recycled water bottles, as mentioned in our sherpa blog here.

Why are sherpa jackets popular?

Aside from its warm and cozy feel, sherpa is trending for many reasons as noted in this article from Living Spaces:

  • Offers lightweight warmth
  • Avoids animal products like wool
  • Great for other items like blankets and mittens

Can sherpa be washed?

YES! Sherpa’s fabric is safe to throw in your regular load of laundry. A few sherpa fabric care tips? Cold water is recommended and fabric softener could help keep it extra smooth, but the material is sturdy enough to look brand new wash after wash. And, it’s safe to put in the dryer as well.

Is sherpa fabric long lasting?

Absolutely. Again, with its easy-to-wash properties, sherpa will retain its shape and feel for years. Plus, it’s made with durable, high-quality fibers that stay intact through every adventure.
