Why Sustainable Fashion Matters

Does shopping for sustainable fashion really have a positive impact on the environment?

Absolutely.

Let’s back up a bit. For those who are new to this term, we can break down exactly what sustainable fashion is, and why it’s important.

By definition from Emeritus,Sustainable fashion is an all-inclusive term that refers to products, processes, activities, and stakeholders (policymakers, brands, consumers) aiming to achieve a carbon-neutral fashion sector based on equality, social justice, animal welfare, and ecological integrity.”

Before we get into the ins and outs of sustainable clothing let’s look at where the health of our environment stands today.

According to Earth Day, the apparel industry is responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions. Left unregulated, this number could climb to 26% by 2050. We can do better.

Plus, the average person buys 60% more clothing items than they did 15 years ago, but keep them for half as long. And get this - the average item of clothing may be worn less than 10 times before disposal. Not good.

This is why we have been relentlessly committed to being a part of the solution with our Toward Ever Better initiative, which affirms our belief that harmony is possible between business, nature and society in sustainable apparel.

Here’s an overview of our 3 core promises:

  1. Sustainable Products - If we’re going to make real change, our product lines need to change. We’re committed to creating 90% sustainable products by 2025. Most of our products are made with recycled materials such as water bottles and eco sherpa.
  2. Sustainable Operations - To keep our emissions low, we’ve eliminated 99% of all air-freight from our supply chain. Fun fact: Shipping via sea freight reduces CO2 emissions on an average rate of 20-30X.
  3. Sustainable Productions - We’re an affiliate of the Fair Labor Association to ensure equitable treatment of everyone throughout our supply chain. As noted by Emeritus, creating fair wages and a healthy work environment is key for progress, as some companies exploit workers.

With these promises in place, we are working towards reducing waste and creating a healthier product lifecycle. Small steps, big changes.
