The Seattle Pickleball Scene: Courts, Leagues & Gear for All Skill Levels

Everywhere you look, pickleball has become kind of a big … dill

With minimal equipment and simple-to-follow rules, pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports over the past few years, especially in populated cities like our hometown of Seattle. If you’ve played tennis, badminton, or ping pong before, think of pickleball as a sister sport—with its own whimsical spirit.

The History of Pickleball in Seattle

One of our favorite facts about pickleball is that it originated near Seattle. Like most good ideas, this one started with boredom. Back in Bainbridge Island during the summer of 1965, three fathers, Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum were trying to entertain their families with an activity they could all play together and decided to improvise with a made-up sport with items around their house. It was a hit.

After years of building the sport from the ground up, this dynamic trio managed to solidify the rules, create the official court, and kick off the first tournaments. As a result, pickleball gained much momentum. So much so that the United States Amateur Pickleball Association was organized in 1984.

Now that the history lesson is over, shall we get into how you can get in on the action and play pickleball in Seattle?

The Best Pickleball Gear in Seattle

We’re sure at this point you’re itching to serve, dink, and avoid stepping in the kitchen at all costs.

But before you do, you’ll need the right paddle, as it’s recommended to use a distinct design for your skill level.

To find your paddle, a portable net, or set of outdoor and indoor balls, you can try a large retailer, or stop by a local Seattle spot like Play it Again Sports, which sells new and used equipment. Or, check out Big 5 Sporting Goods, which has a few locations in the Seattle area.

As far as your wardrobe goes, you’ll need breathable clothes while you break a sweat. To keep it cool on the court, we recommend a lightweight moisture-wicking men’s hooded shirt or a simple sleeveless women’s polo. Lastly, since you’ll be shuffling from side to side often, wear athletic sneakers with good traction to prevent injuries.
