Top 5 Summer Hiking Trails at Mount Rainier National Park

Gear up and get outside to immerse yourself in the best of Mount Rainier summer hiking!

As one of our hometown hot spots, this National Park (NP) is beloved by many who live in and travel to the Pacific Northwest. The iconic area is known for the towering 14,411-foot-tall Mount Rainier, which is an activated volcano that stretches across five major rivers. Throughout the park, you can participate in a variety of relaxing or high-intensity activities, from scenic drives to treacherous climbs. While hiking is the main attraction, you can go fishing or boating, or take a picturesque bicycle ride.

The outdoor elements are exceptional year-round, but we’re putting summer in the spotlight today.

Summer is the peak time for rushing waterfalls and rolling hills of wildflowers. And by July, most of the ice and snow should be thawed, meaning you can cover more ground.

Read on to discover five spectacular Mount Rainier hiking trails that are especially enjoyable in the summer months!

For a Mesmerizing View: Reflection Lakes

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Length: 2.75 miles

The Details:

Since this area is not fully accessible in winter, this is the prime time to see one of the most postcard-worthy views and immerse yourself in blooming wildflowers. An easygoing 3-mile loop, this is one of the most visited trails throughout the park, so you’ll need to get there early to secure a parking space.

True to its name, the lake mirrors the mountain perfectly on a clear day, creating a memorable reflection you’ll be thinking about on your journey home.

A Camper’s Paradise: The Summerland Trail

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Length: 10.44 miles

The Details:

Given the season, this is an obvious choice. An exceptional spot for hikers and campers, this trail gives you the flexibility to choose how challenging you want your journey to be. Along the long path, you’ll catch glimpses of a glacier, goats, and gorgeous wildflowers.

A pro tip, since you may be out all day and overnight, the trick is to pack a few layers. We recommend this soft and warm men’s pullover, or this versatile wind-resistant hybrid women’s jacket

Wander to a Waterfall: Silver Falls Loop Trail

Difficulty Level: Moderate

Length: 3 miles

The Details:

If you prefer listening to the sounds of rushing water as you stroll, you must check out this simple hike to see the stunning Silver Falls, which is particularly powerful in the summer. As you trek alongside the peaceful Ohanapecosh River, you’ll get to swing by a historic hot springs resort.

Since the water from the falls will make the ledges a bit slippery, go slow, wear shoes with grips, and pack a waterproof jacket like this men’s durable water-resistant jacket or this women’s protective and packable windbreaker

For a Cloud-Free Day: The Skyline Trail

Difficulty Level: Moderate/Difficult

Length: 5.7 miles

The Details:

One of the most complex trails to conquer at Mount Rainier, you’ll need to pack sturdy boots and a resilient spirit, as the terrain can be unpredictable.

Nonetheless, this is still one of the most popular spots to hit if you’re visiting, especially if you enjoy getting a great workout in as you meander through meadows and glaciers.

As a bonus, you’ll get the opportunity to head to Panorama Point, where you can spot Tatoosh Peaks, Mount Adams, Mount Saint Helens, and Mount Hood on a clear day. Once you’ve reached the peak, get your camera out to capture this sweeping view.
