Want to have a greener wardrobe?
Before we begin, we’re not talking about color. We’re talking about sustainable fashion. If you’re looking to make more ethical choices when it comes to your clothes, you’re in the right place, reading the right blog.
Although we are proud to be a retailer, we recognize it’s our responsibility to find and invest in better production solutions.
More than 100 billion garments are produced by the fashion industry each year, yet only 1% of discarded clothing is recycled according to EarthDay.org. Jaw-dropping, right?
Altogether, the apparel industry is responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions each year. This number is expected to climb to 26% in 2050 if we don’t reverse our current practices.
But let’s not simply spread the message of just doom and gloom here. Let’s make steps towards positive change.
What are some easy ways to reduce your fashion carbon footprint?
1. Choose retailers with ethical production processes
If you can, steer clear of fast fashion retailers, as some workers in these organizations are often paid below minimum wage.
As stated in our Toward Ever Better initiative, we’re proud to be an affiliate of the Fair Labor Association to ensure equitable treatment of everyone throughout the supply chain. To make sure you’re purchasing from ethical retailers, check out their sustainability initiatives and company policies on their websites.
2. Embrace second-hand shopping
Let’s be real. Thrift shops have some of the best fashion finds out there. Head to your local goodwill or second-hand store to explore their selections. You’ll likely leave with some lovely treasures, and confidence that you're helping reduce fashion waste.
3. Live like a conscious consumer
Conscious consumerism is on the rise, and it’s easy to start changing your shopping habits, even if it’s little by little.
For instance, you can shop at fair trade establishments to ensure workers are compensated correctly for their original products. Another practice is selecting eco-friendly or ethically sourced fabrics to reduce pollution from synthetic materials.
For instance, in our growing sustainable apparel lines, we use materials made from recycled water bottles. See below for a few samples of our bestselling durable items.
